In this lesson, you’ll find the first 5 songs that I like to teach my guitar students to teach them power chords.
Main Content
Over the years as a guitar teacher, I have worked hard to find great songs to teach essential music concepts for the guitar. I have learned that my students want to play music they recognize and enjoy playing from the very beginning. I have also found that I am a better teacher when I can find a recognizable song to help move a student forward instead of using an exercise. Once I find a great song, I work at it until it really shows my students the technique or concept I’m trying to teach.
I believe that a song can teach so much more if it’s presented right. My hope is to help cultivate musicians in the most enjoyable way possible. This website is full of guitar lessons using songs that I select, rework and use to teach my own students.
The guitar lessons start with beginner songs and easy chords. Each new song is used to teach new chords and concepts in a logical order. The teaching sequences that I use come from guitar pedagogy classes that I took while earning a Bachelors of Music in Guitar Performance. You will also find chord charts, guitar tips, gear recommendations and more. Everything is free and available to download or print for your personal use.
